Cloud and Wallfish { kids book review by 10 yr old }

Cloud and Wallfish

Cloud and Wallfish is a book about a boy and a girl during the time of the Cold War. Noah finds himself in a crazy and dangerous event when his parents decide to go on a trip to East Berlin. His whole life completely changes, and he has to forget his past of quiet, small-town living and take on a new secret identity. He also has to live by the new rules, like Rule #1: They are always listening!

The book was so well written that I felt that I, myself, was there. I was able to understand Noah and feel his fears. I loved this historic fiction novel and that it had true events and facts stored inside it. Some things were hard for me to understand, but it makes me want to learn more about this time. I loved the secret files at each end at the chapter; it helped me know more about what was going on. I would recommend this amazing book for people ten and up.

Cloud and Wallfish is a book full of secrets, codes, and friendships!

Parent note ” This was a really great book and I am happy my daughter picked to read this.  Since I am from Germany myself, this was a subject dear to my heart and I am always wondering how I can teach her more about this time back then. Since we also had the opportunity to travel to Berlin the year before, it was really great to have another opportunity to talk about many events. I think the author did a great job of keeping a certain mood and mystery in the book. It wasn’t necessarily an easy read ( not so much because of events in the story but more because of  the bit complicated story line and characters). I think my daughter really enjoyed it though and it helped her understand some of the history.

Reading Challenge 2016

Both my girls, now 7 and 10 are avid readers. They both started reading and an early age and we have read to the both of them since before they were born. Reading came easy to them and they read with pleasure to this day forward. Especially through homeschooling we have become aware of the important role of books in our life and have become big supporters of reading in general ! This year has been very challenging for us in Oregon, and we have met many difficulties. Books gave us a safe haven and made it easier for the girls to understand some things. More to our challenges and why I haven’t posted much lately, will follow in another blog post soon. For now I want to share their wonderful reading accomplishment with you and I hope that it might inspire you or your children to pick some of these up as well. There are so many amazing books out there just waiting to be read ! Some of the books on the lists will appear on both , since they now have reached the age where they are able to switch books with each other 🙂 I love their little book discussions, how they discuss events and characters ! If you have any questions to any titles, feel free to ask 🙂 Some of these are older editions ( library) but newer ones might be available or you can always find a great deal used on abebooks.com or if you half a half price book store around the corner, you will most likely find them there… Also since they are still a few days left in the year, the list is most likely still to grow.. so check back for additions 😉

Our goal was to read as many chapter books as possible so i mainly just logged those. I wish I could have added all the picture books as well and some of our non-fiction books are missing , I tend to forget the titles of those too fast and picture books are still sooo beneficial even for older kids ! It has been so fun to log all these books and be able to look through the lists and see what they have read. It’s been a lot of fun.. I hope you enjoy the list 😉 I think we will try to continue keeping our reading log year round 😀

*FeatureFriday*Olga da polga * Usborne Books & More *

I have been with Usborne Books & More a few months now and still am discovering beautiful new titles so often. Today I want to introduce Olga da Polga to you !

wp-1464412348716.jpeg

When I learnt the other day that ” Olga da Polga ” was another title  written by the one and only Michael Bond ( CREATOR OF PADDINGTON BEAR ) I just knew it had to be in our collection. We love Paddington bear, especially after our visit to London two years ago ❤  I had missed out an a great special ( it was actual in the customer special a few weeks ago, so pay attention to those) but I was putting in an order  anyways so this one was the one I picked with it. At $17.99 it seemed like an average price for a good picture book.Sometimes I feel picture books are so much more expensive than the little chapter books, but really we get so much more than just a story with these !  I had no idea that this was actually all of OLGA DA POLGA’s stories and over 170 pages long and consists of 13 chapters, which really makes this a great deal ! The illustrations are totally adorable and the moment I opened the book and saw Olga’s cute, big eyes I knew this would be our new favorite book soon !

wp-1464412335642.jpeg

Olga would be a perfect read a loud for about 6 yeas and up but younger ones that can pay attention to a well rounded story I am sure would already love it as well. On every other page there are big, beautiful illustrations sometimes even over two pages that makes this super cute story come alive even more !

Olga da Polga is actually a Kane Miller book and I have come to learn just how special so many of their beautiful picture books really are. The book itself is also very sturdy and large (which make the illustrations even more beautiful , especially over two pages) and the hardcover binding promises for a very long lifetime. And the wonderful thing with all of Usborne Books & More’s books, if anything should ever happen to your lovely book (toddlers, cats, dogs or guinea pigs) then you can take advantage of the 1/2 Price Lifetime replacement policy.

We have not read the whole book yet, but I know this one will be a new favorite soon that  we will read over and over again ❤

Albert’s Almost Amazing Adventure

Albert is back from vacation and meets all his friends at the playground, of course they all want to know about his adventures but keep interrupting him over and over again. In the end he doesn’t even get to tell them what his awesome adventure really, really was 🙂

It’s a very funny, imaginative story with beautiful drawings. The author made the right choice when he switched from the black and white drawings to the beautifully illustrated, lively images in color. It explains the story so well and lets little ones follow even easier . The story does have some silly images and mentions zombies and monsters, but really just in a funny way. Both my girls ( 6,9) loved it and thought it was hilarious, especially the zombie cats !! A fun and silly, original picture book !! Check it our here !!

Editorial Reviews ( from amazon)
Review
The contrast between when Albert is telling his story and when his friends are making guesses as to his amazing adventures is illustrated in pictures that shift between black and white and wonderful colors. It is a clever device to help your students determine what is real and what is fantasy. –Brian Smith, Scholastic Blog for Teachers

The Cay and Living Seas 9-11 MBTP

These two units (9-11) have been challenging and fun at the same time ( mainly challegning for me because of all the extra time with experiments rofl ). Since I had read a few reviews about the Cay ahead of time, I had decided  to read the novel before my daughter would start it. I had never read it before until now, but thought this story was really great and I’m excited to read it together and share it now with my daughter. I think even though it qualifies as a classic already, it is a book that even in today’s time  would be so valuable to read.

Here is a great little slideshow with some great general info about the book and story line

The story takes place during the beginning of World War II. This lesson only gives a brief introduction into world war II since it will be covered in great detail in level 10-11. There will be a few activities about this and we struggled finding some good material to get a brief introduction, and I wished MBTP would have added a short book to this Unit. Even though my daughter is somewhat familiar with the outlines of the war, a nice overview would have been made things a little easier. This is a subject that has such depth it is hard to just google something without spending days reading. Of course there is always idea share and many of our awesome ” Movingbeyondthepage groups” where many moms have some great links ready to send to you.

For example, this one . ( if it is stuck on the whole playlist, skip ahead to #15 thats about WWII)

Exploring Curacao and the carribean islands was a much more pleasant subject. This was incredible fun, we visited many websites and also got help from our friends ” Travelkids” as they visited the island. I swear they have been to some of the coolest places.

We also enjoyed studying the island art.

In Lesson 2 we explored Curacao even deeper and I found a great website to learn more about import- export, detailed about Curacao ( and many other countries).

In the literature unit you will work and review some grammar, subject/ verb agreements, comma usage, prepositions and learn to work with different transitions for sentences. I’m glad these came up in this unit, since we have been struggling a little with some of these (transitions for sentence beginning especially).  I always like the mix MBTP offers, a little Grammar here, some science there, it never feels so overwhelming or boring.

We also spent a lot of time studying sharks ! And coral reefs… We still have a great list of movies to watch that are currently on Amazon Prime !

The book provided through MBTP about coral reefs is also a pretty good pick and gives a deep understanding about the ocean world. She had no trouble explaining me everything afterwards, lol.

We finished today with a super fun experiment from the Ocean’s life Science book ( which I have just seen has been replaced to a different one recently 😦 . I hope the experiment is in there as well, it was so simple and worked so well !!

( the experiment is #18 on the playlist , sorry sometimes the links give me trouble and it just adds the whole playlist 😉 )

Here are a few more examples from this Unit. Please don’t mind the few spelling mistakes on her paper 😉 We try not to nitpick around her too much 😉

Hope you enjoyed out glimpse into the Cay and ocean life 🙂

9 to 11 Moving beyond the page addtional resources

These cards are a  wonderful addition for the units of 9 to 11 for Moving beyond the page.

These are cute cards with great info about figurative language which comes up quite often throughout MBTP 9-111. It was very helpful for the Poems unit, view from Saturday and as I am getting a quick look for the Tall Tales study ahead, it will be of use for it as well.

I printed these out black and white, let her color them and then laminated them. They turned out to be wonderful as bookmarks which my daughters uses very frequently. Download for free here at teachespayteachers.

The BFG | Unit 3 | Concept 2

Last week we started the one of the books we have been most excited about BFG. I really love it that we get to discover these books together, since I have read a lot more “European authors” as a child, I get to discover some of the American authors and literature with her. The classics are also so different from most modern aged books. Something more magical when you get to read a book that has been around for a long time and has been loved by thousands of kids before. Of course the BFG isn’t really that old yet, but still, we have been excited to learn about the friendship of Sophie and her big friendly Giant.

When we start a new unit, I always try to look ahead a little and see what things are coming up and if there will be anything special that I need to get before the lessons. Most often it is mentioned at the beginning of the units, but I like to prepare a bit more, write down the lessons on a separate piece of paper for filing and lesson tracking. Clearly not necessary but it gives me something to do and I do feel like it helps me with my day-to-day planning.
Anyway, one of the first activities was a vocabulary paper. A figure of a giant and labels to cut out and sort and match the words accordingly. It looked fun, but I thought since we are going to be talking about a GIANT why not make things a little bigger.
So, I started tracing the body parts of the giant on bigger paper and cut each of them out and taped them to the wall. Then I wrote down the definitions onto the giant and the matching words on separate pieces of paper and cut those out… Voilà !!

The girls loved it and were very excited when they saw the big giant on the door. I am pretty sure he will stay a while 🙂
